What types of stigma face people who use foodbanks? Familiar with the concept ‘meritocracy’? What about the ‘myth of meritocracy’? There are many preconceived ideas on poverty in circulation. Some support the idea that people who experience poverty are lazy, or lacking in some way. Understanding meritocracy as a myth helps to challenge harmful stereotypes such as these. One example where this can be seen, is through the case of foodbanks.
There are many definitions of poverty. For example, it can be relative, absolute, or subjective, even extreme. Poverty has been linked to at least three key indicators: income, access to basic services, and social exclusion. Tackling poverty requires a a multidimensional approach.
Understanding foodbanks
To counter poverty, foodbanks have become a necessary community service, supporting adults, seniors, children and families to meet their very basic needs in times of hardship.
